Meet the Winners: Webinar on IEEE Xtreme

IEEE BUET Student Branch arranged a webinar titled “Meet the Winners: Webinar on IEEE Xtreme”. The purpose of this webinar was to familiarize the participants with IEEE Xtreme, the premier competition of IEEE, a 24-hour event which is hosted simultaneously around the world.

The speakers of the webinar were Ashiqul Islam and Sheikh Asif Imran Shouborno, both of whom are team members of RavenclawBUET, the team which became the national champion in both IEEEXtreme 11.0 & 12.0, securing 22nd position worldwide in 12.0. Thirty (30) participants, from different universities of Bangladesh including BUET, attended the webinar directly on Zoom. The webinar was also broadcast live on Facebook, the view of which reached approximately 1000.

The webinar started at 03:00 P.M. with Satyaki Banik, the Chair of IEEE BUET Student Branch, introducing the two speakers of the session and the student ambassador of Xtreme 14.0 from IEEE BUET Student Branch, Nusrat Subah Binte Shakhawat. Then Sheikh Asif Imran Shouborno introduced the concept of competitive programming and ways to start competitive programming. He also introduced different platforms for competitive programming like Codeforces, Atcoder, Lightoj, Timus etc. After that, Ashiqul Islam talked about the techniques to effectively use time in a 24-hour contest and strategies to co-ordinate efforts of the teammates. He also showed a sample problem and discussed the solving methods. 

Next, Nusrat Subah Binte Shakhawat explained the rules of Xtreme 14.0 and how BUET Student Branch can help the participants. Finally, there was a Q&A session where the speakers answered questions asked by the participants. The event ended with a group photo taken online through the Zoom platform and a note of thanks from Satyaki Banik to the participants.

Speaker Bio:

Ashiqul Islam:

Ashiqul Islam is a final year undergraduate student of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He was one of the team members of RavenclawBUET, which became the national champion in both IEEEXtreme 11.0 & 12.0, with securing 22nd position worldwide in 12.0.

He has significant achievements in the competitive programming contests. His team BUET BloodHound became the 1st Runner Up at ICPC Dhaka Regional 2018. Later in ICPC Dhaka Regional 2019, his team BUET HellBent became the Champion. Ashiqul Islam, with BUET HellBent, later participated in ICPC Asia West Continent Final Contest 2019 and became 1st Runner Up.

Sheikh Asif Imran Shouborno:

Ashiqul Islam is a final year undergraduate tdrstudent of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He was one of the team members of RavenclawBUET, which became the national champion in both IEEEXtreme 11.0 & 12.0, with securing 22nd position worldwide in 12.0.

Besides his success at IEEEXtreme competition, he has worked as IEEEXtreme 13.0 Bangladesh Section Lead. He was also the Ambassador of IEEEXtreme 11.0 & 12.0 from IEEE BUET Student Branch.

He is currently the Chairperson of IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) BUET Student Branch Chapter.
