The IEEE Student Activities Committee (SAC) started a new initiative in 2020 by establishing a Virtual Speakers Bureau (VSB). SAC used the global IEEE network to identify top speakers who are willing to come to different student branches via remote broadcast to present on a myriad of topics. IEEE BUET Student Branch presents the first event of the VSB initiative, a webinar on “IEEE Student Membership Benefits.”

Speaker: Dr Elisa Barney Smith, IEEE MGA Student Activities Committee (SAC) Chair
Dr. Elisa Barney Smith is a Professor at Boise State University in Idaho USA. She is the 2019 and 2020 Chair of IEEE’s Student Activities Committee. She loves to interact with students, and is thrilled to be able to offer new programs and to expand other programs to continually improve the student member experience.
Dr. Barney joined the faculty at Boise State University in September 1999. Her research focuses on image processing and machine learning. She has been a visiting professor at University of the Saarland (Germany), LORIA (France) and Telecom ParisTech(France).
She is a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and SPIE (Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers). She was the Chair of the Boise section of IEEE from 2000-2003, and chair of Region 6’s North-East Area from 2009-2013.
IEEE BUET Student Branch arranged a webinar titled “IEEE Student Membership Benefits”. The purpose of this webinar was to let the participants know about the numerous benefits of being an IEEE student member and therefore to enlarge the IEEE community.
The webinar started at 09.00 PM with Satyaki Banik, the Chair of IEEE BUET Student Branch, introducing the speaker of the session. Then Dr Barney talked about the facilities of being an IEEE student member. She introduced the overall expansion of IEEE student membership, which shows that IEEE has engaged more than 100000 students in 100+ countries and 3200+ institutions in the whole world with their student activities. She also introduced the process of IEEE membership, updating IEEE member profile and the membership certificate. Further she talked about the advantages of being an IEEE student member which includes IEEE Potentials Magazine, diverse skill development courses and contests, expansion of individual networks beyond the school by joining IEEE learning network as in VSB, Collabratec and so on. The Student Activities Committee offers contests like Xtreme (a 24-hour long programming competition), Micromouse, Hackathons, scholarships, awards, professional development programs like SPAx, monthly webinars and many more. For the interested people out there, this year, the IEEEXtreme will take place on October 24. Stay updated to the Facebook Page for updates.
Dr Barney wonderfully explained another perspectives of being an IEEE student member, such as, Member Get a Member (MGM), Gift of Membership, IEEE Into Focus Photo Contest, IEEE Day and so on. IEEE has 39 different societies of various interests which provide the students to upgrade their skils in their fields of interest and also improves their leadership as well as communication skills. She also told about the interesting educational resources IEEE provides which includes Trynano.org, IEEE.tv, TryComputing.org, Itunes University, IEEEXplore Digital Library, ILN and IEEE e-learning Library. After talking about the administrative hierarchy and student branch services, there was a Q/A session where the speaker answered questions asked by the participants.
The event ended with a group photo taken online through the Zoom platform and a note of thanks from Satyaki Banik to the participants.
