IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee
IEEE BUET Student Branch and IEEE Bangladesh Section jointly organised the highly anticipated two day long virtual event titled “Student Membership & Leadership Summit” on August 21 & 22, with the support of IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee. Participants from almost 39 countries from 10 different IEEE Regions had registered for this event. In the end, a total number of 190 attended the summit over the two days. Out of the 190 participants, 64.67% were IEEE members, 84.52% of them were student and graduate student members and the rest 15.48% were professional members.
The Day 1 of the esteemed event was scheduled to start from 5:00 PM (GMT+6) on August 21. The summit was attended by student members, graduate student members, Young Professional members, respected Professional Members, honorable branch mentors and counselors and the respectable executive committee members of IEEE Bangladesh Section. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section at 5:00 PM. In her speech, she highlighted the recent activities and achievements of the IEEE Bangladesh Section.
The first session Best Practices of IEEE Student Branches in R10 was moderated by the Chair of IEEE BUET SB WIE AG and Vice Chair of IEEE BUET SB, Suhee Sanjana Mehjabin. She read the highly decorative bios of the speakers who were to share their ideas with the participants. The five speakers, Mohammed Asaf-Ud-Doulah; Chair, IEEE AIUB SB (Bangladesh Section), Satyaki Banik; Chair, IEEE BUET SB (Bangladesh Section), Mayesha Tafannum; Chair, IEEE NSU SB (Bangladesh Section), Mithresh G P; Secretary, IEEE PIT SB (Madras Section, India), Hashan Jayalath; Chair, IEEE University of Moratuwa SB (Sri Lanka Section) each presented their views on the best practices of IEEE R10 within their given time limits. After every presentation, the speakers answered any questions from the attendants which were collected by the moderator. The session started at 5:10 PM and ended at 6:10 PM, lasting one hour.
After the first session, the participants participated in a quiz named “How much do you know IEEE?”. It was part of a six-part quiz session, covering IEEE regions, sections, student branches, WIE, YP, IEEE held competitions, flagship publications, awards, web portals, brand guidelines and much more.
The second session commenced at 6:10 PM by the moderator Suhee Sanjana Mehjabin by reading the speaker’s bio. The speaker of this session was Ewell Tan; Project Manager, IEEE Asia-Pacific Limited. She shared points on Utilizing IEEE Vtools & IEEE Collabratec. After her very detailed presentation, she answered the questions in the chat box. The session lasted 30 minutes, ending the session at 6:40 PM.
The moderator for the next three sessions was Satyaki Banik; Chair, IEEE BUET SB (Bangladesh Section). He initiated the third session, by the IEEE Bangladesh Section, to depict the IEEE Bangladesh Section Best Practices at 6:40 PM. He read the bios of the Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Session, Celia Shahnaz and the Secretary Raihan-Ur-Rashid, who were to jointly talk about the achievements and practices of the IEEE Bangladesh Section. All the questions from the chat box were collected by the moderator and given to the speakers, ending the session at 7:00 PM.
The second quiz link was then given to the attendants for their participation which was to be completed within 5 minutes.
Satyaki Banik then introduced the next speaker, Dr. M. Tanseer Ali; Vice-Chair (Technical), IEEE YP BDS Counselor, IEEE AIUB SB (2016-2017), Recipient of IEEE R10 Outstanding SB Counselor Award 2018, and asked him to start the next session. Dr. M. Tanseer Ali talked about the Annual Plan Submission of the Student Branch and answered the participants’ questions. This lasted from 7:00 PM to 7:20 PM.
The following session was about Event Planning & Implementation. In order for the participants to get to know each other better over the virtual platform, the moderator asked the participants to message their neighbours in the chat box. The moderator Satyaki Banik then read the excellent bios of the intended speakers. The first speaker Dr. Shaikh Fattah; Professor, Dept. of EEE, BUET; Nominations and Appointments Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section, conducted some polls to see the opinions of the participants about virtual and face-to-face events and shared his views on how to plan online events. The next speaker Md. Shakil Anwar; General Secretary, IEEE BUET SB (Bangladesh Section), gave his presentation on the topic. An interesting game was then conducted in the chat box for the participants to engage in. They were asked to send certain keywords to their neighbours and the team to collect the maximum number of keywords were announced the winners. This introduced the participants with each other and helped to create acquaintances on a virtual platform. This session lasted for 20 minutes and ended at 7:40 PM.
The moderator then gave the link to the third quiz in the chat box. Then moved on to the next session.
Next was the WIE track moderated by Suhee Sanjana Mehjabin; Chair, IEEE BUET SB WIE AG. The session was to talk about the IEEE WIE – Best Practices, where the speakers Indhumathi Gunasekaran; R10 Regional Student Ambassador, Former Chair, IEEE PIT SB WIE AG & Winner of IEEE Women in Engineering Inspiring Student Member of the Year Award 2020 and Nafisa Tasnim; Vice Chair, IEEE BDS WIE talked on the topic and answered any questions given by the attendants, ending the Day 1 of the two day summit. The sessions ended with a group photo with all the participants through the virtual platform.
Day 2 of the summit started from 5:00 PM (GMT+6). The first session on this day was Best Practices of IEEE Young Professionals in R10: Importance of continuing IEEE membership after graduation. The Chair of IEEE BUET Student Branch, Satyaki Banik and Suhee Sanjana Mehjabin, Chair, IEEE BUET SB WIE AG started the day by reading the bios of the honorable speakers of the session. The speakers, Dr. Sajid Muhaimin Choudhury; Chair, IEEE YP Bangladesh Section, Dr. Ashwini Appaji M; Chair, IEEE YP Bangalore Section, Mr. Aditya Kameswara Rao Nandula; Treasurer, IEEE YP Kharagpur Section, Dr. Haroon Rashid; Chair, IEEE YP Malaysia Section, all gave presentations on the topic, sharing their views and opinions with the participants. After each presentation, the speakers answered questions from the attendants which were collected from the chat box by the moderator. The first session lasted one hour, ending at 6:00 PM.
There were quizzes for the participants just like the previous day, the links for which were given in the chat box. The fourth quiz of the summit was given after the first session at 6:00 PM.
Before the next session started, Dr. Celia Shahnaz suggested taking a group photo to commemorate the occasion.
Sudeendra Koushik; Keynote Speaker, Writer and Evangelist; Chief Innovator, PRASU; Board Member, IEEE TEMS Board of Governors and Chairman, IEEE TEMS India was the speaker for the next session, titled – Picking up Entrepreneurship. After Satyaki Banik read his splendid bio, Sudeendra Koushik gave his presentation and took questions from the participants who were interested in entrepreneurship, ending the 30 minutes session at 6:30 PM.
Next was the panel discussion, Industry-Academia Collaboration, which was moderated by Irtiza Haque; Lead Engineer, IT department, Grameenphone Ltd., Treasurer, IEEE WIE AG Bangladesh Section, Industrial Activity Coordinator (2018), IEEE WIE AG Bangladesh Section. The discussion was joined by Md. Shakhawat Hossain; COO, Neural Semiconductor, Abdul Mubin Ahmed; Director of Engineering, Ulkasemi Limited and Forkan Bin Quasem; Managing Director, Spectrum Engineering Consortium Limited.
After that, the attendants participated in the fifth quiz, the link for which was given in the chat box.
The next panel discussion on Professional Skill Development joined by Pramiti A Alam; Deputy General Manager, Energypac, Engr. Tanvir Mahmudul Hasan; Assistant Engineer, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and moderated by S. M. Saiduzzaman; Secretary, IEEE SPS Bangladesh Chapter and Newsletter Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section took place from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
Then the session on Financial Reporting was presented by Seishi Takamura, FIEEE; Senior Distinguished Engineer at NTT Corporation, Japan, Treasurer, IEEE Region 10, 2019-20.
After finishing the session, the attendants took part in the last quiz of the summit. The participants could see the winners of the quizzes from the autogenerated leaderboard.
Links to feedback forms and the youtube channel of IEEE BUET Student Branch were given to the participants in the chat box.
The two day long virtual summit was brought to an end by the closing ceremony at 8:00 PM where Celia Shahnaz; Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section, Huynh Thi Thanh Binh; Chair, IEEE R10 Student Activity Committee, Saaveethya Sivakumar; Regional Student Representative, IEEE R10 Student Activity Committee all shared their sentiment towards the virtual event and showed their appreciation towards the participants for attending the event despite them all being in different timezones. Finally Celia Shahnaz thanked the hardworking volunteers for smoothly conducting the sessions.
